Attridge, translated by Linda M. A Commentary Minneapolis, MN: Since it was discovered in a monastery in Constantinople and published by P. Bryennios in , the Didache or Teaching of the Twelve Apostles has continued to be one of the most disputed of early Christian texts. It has been depicted by scholars as anything between the original of the Apostolic Decree c. It bears no date itself, nor does it make reference to any datable external event, yet the picture of the Church which it presents could only be described as primitive, reaching back to the very earliest stages of the Church’s order and practice in a way which largely agrees with the picture presented by the NT, while at the same time posing questions for many traditional interpretations of this first period of the Church’s life.

June 26, Site features routinely malfunction. Mingle2 won’t let me log in. A pop-up says my IP is blocked. The only reason I can come up with is I harass scammers on the site who post fake or obscene profiles and profile images. And, yeah, I do piss a few of them off sometimes. Great way to curtail their scam attempts by wasting as much of their time as possible.

Women were the property of their husbands. That is an earthly law, maybe that’s what doesn’t exists in heaven? I realize I’m not addressing the whole bride of Christ thing. But I do have a few Christian friends, and it seems to me that their love for God is something that unites them, not divides them. Or take for example, parents. The love they have for their children is infinite; that doesn’t take away the love they have for their spouses; in fact it strengthens their bond.
I get really upset when people try to say that there is no marriage or special relationships in the afterlife. I see it everywhere, from religous texts to new agey folks who explain that as energy spirits we are so evolved or whatever that we don’t need marriage or sex or whatever. I feel like all of these philosophies denegrate to a base level so many things that have meaning to me, like love, personality, individualism, and spousal relationships.
It’s like they’re saying the most important principles won’t matter to us anymore. How is that supposed to be comforting???!!!!!

Other families are a very general movement with no universal governing authority. Mainline Protestantism, for example, includes such diverse groups as Adventists , Anabaptists , Baptists , Congregationalists , Evangelicals , Holiness churches , Lutherans , Methodists , Moravians , Presbyterians , Reformed. Many of these have, as a result of ecumenical dialogue, established full or partial communion agreements.
Polycarp was martyred c. But Polycarp also was not only instructed by apostles, and conversed with many who had seen Christ, but was also, by apostles in Asia, appointed bishop of the Church in Smyrna, whom I also saw in my early youth, for he tarried [on earth] a very long time, and, when a very old man, gloriously and most nobly suffering martyrdom, departed this life, having always taught the things which he had learned from the apostles, and which the Church has handed down, and which alone are true.
To these things all the Asiatic Churches testify, as do also those men who have succeeded Polycarp down to the present time, a man who was of much greater weight, and a more stedfast witness of truth, than Valentinus, and Marcion, and the rest of the heretics. He it was who, coming to Rome in the time of Anicetus caused many to turn away from the aforesaid heretics to the Church of God, proclaiming that he had received this one and sole truth from the apostles, that, namely, which is handed down by the Church.
There are also those who heard from him that John, the disciple of the Lord, going to bathe at Ephesus, and perceiving Cerinthus within, rushed out of the bath-house without bathing, exclaiming, “Let us fly, lest even the bath-house fall down, because Cerinthus, the enemy of the truth, is within. Then, again, the Church in Ephesus, founded by Paul, and having John remaining among them permanently until the times of Trajan, is a true witness of the tradition of the apostles.
Irenaeus also mentions Polycarp in his letter to Florinus. These opinions, Florinus, that I may speak in mild terms, are not of sound doctrine; these opinions are not consonant to the Church, and involve their votaries in the utmost impiety; these opinions, even the heretics beyond the Church’s pale have never ventured to broach; these opinions, those presbyters who preceded us, and who were conversant with the apostles, did not hand down to thee.
For, while I was yet a boy, I saw thee in Lower Asia with Polycarp, distinguishing thyself in the royal court, and endeavouring to gain his approbation. Whatsoever things he had heard from them respecting the Lord, both with regard to His miracles and His teaching, Polycarp having thus received [information] from the eye-witnesses of the Word of life, would recount them all in harmony with the Scriptures.
These things, through, God’s mercy which was upon me, I then listened to attentively, and treasured them up not on paper, but in my heart; and I am continually, by God’s grace, revolving these things accurately in my mind. And I can bear witness before God, that if that blessed and apostolical presbyter had heard any such thing, he would have cried out, and stopped his ears, exclaiming as he was wont to do: This fact, too, can be made clear, from his Epistles which he despatched, whether to the neighbouring Churches to confirm them, or to certain of the brethren, admonishing and exhorting them.
Irenaeus also mentions Polycarp in his letter to Pope Victor.

Sources[ edit ] In the Wesleyan tradition, Christian theology and thus Christian ethics are informed by four distinguishable sources known as the Wesleyan Quadrilateral. The four sources are scripture , tradition , reason, and Christian experience. Stephen Long , Jewish ethics and the life of Jesus figure prominently in Christian ethics, but “The Bible is the universal and fundamental source of specifically Christian ethics”, Long also claims “Christian ethics finds its source in diverse means, but it primarily emerges from the biblical narrative and especially the call of Abraham and Sarah and subsequent creation of the Jewish people”.
Ethics in the Bible Much of Christian ethics derives from Biblical scripture and Christians have always considered the Bible profitable to teach, reprove, correct, and train in righteousness. In this, Jesus was reaffirming a teachings of Deut 6: Christ united these commands together and proposed himself as a model of the love required in John Paul is also the source of the phrase ” Law of Christ “, though its meaning and the relationship of Paul of Tarsus and Judaism are still disputed.
